A Physiatrist is an MD, specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation and trained in internal medicine, general surgery, neurology, orthopedics, physical therapy, exercise physiology, and kinesiology (movement).

Physiatrists treat acute and chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders, to help restore and maximize function and independence in patients with temporary or permanent disorders. They treat patients conservatively first by devising a plan of pain relief through physical therapy, pharmacological intervention and therapeutic injections.
